What excites you most about your PIRE research?

As a graduate student, am happy being a member of this PIRE research project. Hence, I get some concept of how different hydrological variables measured from the actual field conditions and analysis in laboratory under controlled conditions can be used as input for different models. I appreciate this type of community based project for educating the society and make it part of today’s technology especially in developing countries like Ethiopia. This PIRE research project motivates me to do problem solving research’s in my   future career because I get important information from the project member websites.

What’s the most valuable aspect of your research for the people and communities?

My research focuses on soil moisture estimation which is a key state variable in surface hydrology and land-atmosphere interactions. It is a storage term in the water balance, determining how much incident precipitation can infiltrate into the soil and how much will be lost as run-off. In the energy balance, it partitions the net radiation between latent, sensible and ground heat fluxes. Thus, it determines how much water and energy is available for exchanges with the atmosphere. This finding will contribute different concepts for the watershed concerned stakeholders as identification of best fit crop variety, soil moisture fluctuation in terms of special and temporal pattern, effect of different land use on soil moisture storage capability, relationship between soil moisture and river stage change and climate change prediction study using soil moisture index.
