What excites you most about your PIRE research?

PIRE provides the opportunity for my crop modeling research to make a difference in the real world. My PIRE research focuses on providing real time forecast for crop yield based on seasonal climate forecast combined with multiple scenarios of agricultural practice for different crops, including cultivar choice, planting time, fertilizer input, and irrigation water usage where appropriate. These information will be valuable resources that guide farmers in their decision making to maximize their crop production and minimize weather-induced economic loss.

What’s the most valuable aspect of your research for the people and communities?

Predicted yields for various crops under different scenarios of agricultural practice allows farmers to make an informed decision when deciding on what to cultivate in the next season. This is important for addressing challenges facing food security and other wellness of the people and communities.
